So many parts of the world have lost their traditions, colour and detail, but India still has it in hoards, keeping a huge industry of textile recycling alive and thriving. You don’t have to look far to discover that the re-cycling of cloth is stitched into the very fabric of the country.
PATCHWORK FRILL CUSHION
RAG LAMPSHADE
BRIGHT STRIPED CURTAIN
This collection’s manufacturing is managed by a lady called Dhwani, she makes products solely from scrap fabrics and takes her inspiration from the waste she has available. Dhwani employs a team of 15 women who sew, sort and finish all the pieces.
On every sari, there is a 12.5cm strip of cotton sewed to one edge, this strip adds weight to the otherwise floaty fabric, helping it drape and hang nicely. This strip is commonly removed in the rag trade, as most dealings are focused on the silk of the sari. Seeing the heaped pile of cotton strips inspired Dhwani to turn it into a wider piece of fabric. From there, we designed a collection to utilise this incredible fabric and worked with Dhwani to make it come to life.
